In the 1950s the Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS) family of chemicals was developed to manufacture stain-resistant, water-resistant, and non-stick products. PFAS have been widely used in non-stick pans, food packaging, stain repellent clothing, carpets, leather goods, carpets, firefighting foam and even some cosmetic products. Because PFAS chemicals don’t readily breakdown in ground water they became an important emerging health issue nationwide.
